Alright guys and gals, I'm going to give it to you straight.  Ready?

I replied to a blog a few days ago that had something to do with not having to work to become successful (but in very colorful imagery.  This wasn't exactly what the blog was about).  Well, I said that becoming successful involves working hard every day and making the best of the time you have etc etc.

A few minutes ago, I got this email:

"Shane,

I disagree with you when you say that you have to work HARD to become successful in this business.  It's better to work SMART.  I've become friends with some of the top distributors in my company.  They say that they worked SMART to get where they are.  I suggest you try to talk with the millionaires in your company, and see what they say.  They've sold me a bunch of books, videos, and CDs that have inspired me and taught me how to become successful."

...

Okay, first of all, most of the "millionaires" in most companies (notice I said MOST, not all), have gotten rich from preying on people like this guy.  They've SOLD a bunch of outdated, useless mindset training that has no practical value at all in today's MLMs.  Going door to door doesn't work anymore, folks.  Or at least it doesn't for me.

I'd guess that those "millionaires" that he was describing probably has maybe a 40 person dowline (not bad, but not enough to make you a millionaire).  I'd say that they got most of their money from selling their "techniques" to their downline, and whoever else wanted to buy them.  Now while this is a great way to make money, it's dishonest in my eyes.  Why WOULDN'T you want your downline to have success techniques for free (unless you're in a breakaway program, in which it'd probably be better to build a mile wide and an inch deep)?

It's just bad business to charge people who you are supposed to be mentoring.  They'll listen to your tapes, CDs, and read every word of every book that they bought from you.  Sure, you'll make hundreds of dollars off of them, but at what cost to the very people who you're supposed to be helping?

If you're going to mentor, please, do it for free folks.  Don't take advantage of people.  And folks, if you've found a mentor and they want you to buy their techniques, please don't fall into this trap.  A real mentor would help you without asking a cent from you because THEY want to help YOU.

That's just my two cents.
