The Dash

I found this little movie and I thought I'd share it with you.  It's all about "The Dash".  The dash should be very important to all of us.

The next time you go into a cemetery look at the tombstones.  You have a date of birth and a date of death, between the two is a dash.  That little dash is most important entry on our tombstone. That dash represents your life and what you do with it.

It is what is contained in that dash the determines if we will be remembered and what we will be remembered for.  In "potter's fields" around the world are people whose dash holds nothing remarkable.  They lived and they died,  no one even knows their names.

Then there are those whose dash contains evil.  Men like Adolph Hitler will be remembered, not for any great accomplishment but for the evil they spread during their lifetimes.  We can add so many more names to that list,  Memorable for evil.

Then there are those who made such an impact on our lives for their fame, Elvis, Valentino, James Dean.  These men will be remembered for being famous.

 Rembrandt, Michelangelo and Van Gogh for their contributions to art.

Beethoven and Mozart for their groundbreaking contributions to music. (Sorry Elvis has not yet earned the right to be mentioned with them.  If people remember him for his music in 200 years rather than his fame, then he can be included)

Then there are the men of Science, Gallileo, Newton and Einstein

The Peacemakers, Ghandi and Martin Luther King.

We remember all of these men in some cases centuries after their deaths because of what they did with their dash.

All of us have a dash,  while we may not reach the level of those already mentioned we don't have to.  We don't have to change the world just make our contribution to it.  We can do our part and make a small difference.  We may not be famous but those around us will remember us for what we did and the mark we left.  It's not about our birth or death, but what we do with "our dash".
