What is a sphere of influence and how it can help you expand your business

There's an old quote "No man is an island".  Quite simply it means that none of us are totally isolated.  We have friends family and business contacts.  This is what you call a "sphere of influence".  Each and every one of us has one.  These sphere's cross each other and interlink time and time again.   Technically each one of us has a connection somehow to everyone else on the planet however distant.  This is also the premise of the old "Six Degrees of Separation" game where you take a celebrity and through connecting one celebrity to another within six levels you can connect the original celebrity to Kevin Bacon.

All of this should make us understand that we are not limited to our own sphere of influence.  We can use the sphere of influence of other people to connect to people we have never met.  Let me give you a working example from my own experience.

I do identity theft awareness workshops.  Through offering these workshops I met a young man who is the Education Coordinator for an adult self-help group.  This young man has become a strong business contact.  He asked me to attend a Job Fair as a vendor which I did.  At the job fair I met quite a few people that I otherwise would never have met.  Out of the job fair I received a call from the human resources director of a company that also attended.  We chatted for a few minutes because she was calling for the director of a performing arts school.  During our chat I mentioned being a ballet mom.  She immediately set up an appointment with the director of the school.

On meeting the director I discovered that the school has absolutely no community support.  But since I have been a ballet mom for years with a larger school, I have some ideas that can be used at her school, not to mention in my sphere of influence is the director of the school my daughter attended.  I was able to draw on my sphere of influence to put her in contact with the other director I know.  And because I have experience she has asked my to organize a parent support group for her school.  As a founder of the group I know have more spheres of influence through the parents and businesses and community leaders.

Am I going to do business with all of these people?  No, but I now have access to all of these people and their respective sphere's of influence.  My name has traveled well beyond where it would be simply using my own sphere.  I'm not the Pre-Paid Legal Lady trying to sell them something but a known contact active within their sphere.  That equals warm market.  Warm market equals people who know and trust you,
