Now it's the credit unions being used for identity theft, fraud and scams.  Today's San Antonio Express-News carried a small (and I do mean small) article on page 2 of the Business section about a new e-mail scam.

The article was entitled "Texas attorney general warns of e-mail scam".  I'm thinking this would have been better placed on the front page with identity theft being the major problem it is.  Most people who read the paper don't really get around to the business section.  They read front page, local news, comics and sports.  But enough about the lack of intelligence in the placement, lets move on to the article itself.

It seems the fraudsters are onto us.  They know we've figured out the bogus link scam so they have come up with something new, the bogus telephone number.  The scam basically goes like this.  The scammer sends you an e-mail on behalf of your friendly neighborhood credit union.  Then they give you a very official sounding spiel about implementing a new security system to protect your from....Identity Thieves and fraudsters!  (What hypocrites!).  Now since they implemented this system they froze or deactivated your card or your account.  Please call us immediately at........

Of course this number has nothing to do with your credit union.  If you receive this type of e-mail notify your financial institution immediately.  Let them know that they are being used in a scam.  Of course delete the e-mail goes without saying.
