Why does it cost so much to start your own website?

Of course there’s no way to answer this question it depends on too many different factors, [and also because really you can start a website for under £40 per year with minimal computer skills but we will get to that later].

So what are the factors that the cost of a website depends on?

1. Size - the bigger it is the more space you use bandwidth  etc etc

2. E-commerce - do you want to sell from your website

3. Databases  - does your site need a database? If you want your website to have members, a forum, a chat room or would you like it to be self-updateable so your in control, not your web designers?  All these things would need your website to have a database.

4.Search engine optimization - Do you want your website to come up early in the search engines for certain keywords.

5. Flash

Do you want moving pictures or images - i.e. flash animations or a full flash website.

All of the factors above and more  make a big difference in the price your local web designer will quote you, but the fact is the extra cost/time thrust upon them is minimal compared to the huge prices they charge.
