Confidence Comes From Competence

by Lindy Asimus
Questions of confidence often arise, and people will ask - "How do I get more confident?" - and sometimes the reason for their lack of confidence is that they actually don't have the skills to do what it is they are trying to do! Their lack of confidence in that context, is entirely appropriate!

Confidence - that is healthy confidence, comes from knowing your subject, and being able to deliver on your promises. At least that is often at the base of the question, in a business setting. Context in this as in all things, is important to keep in mind.

Start with assessing your current position, and the context in which you are feeling less than confident - or if you are feeling overconfident, check your assumptions too!

Consider :

Are you competent to do this thing?
How do you judge this? What is your measure for comparison?
Are you prepared for the occasion/event/day?
What can you do to be more prepared?
What steps have led you to this point to gain this competency?

Feelings of anxiety can play a role in how confident we feel.

Fear: We may not be perfect at what we want to do.

Reality: Few people are perfect - and perfection is rarely necessary.

There will always be someone better, more able, better prepared, more knowledgeable or more of a 'showman' than us. But if we have something to contribute, then we can be confident that we are entitled to do what we can.

The  only one who needs to give us permission for that - is our inner self.

Try. Learn. Try again.

That's how competency is gained... and with it healthy confidence.
