Healthy Eating Tips: Losing Weight

* Follow the basic principles of healthy eating
* Reduce both your calorie and your fat intake
* Use calorie - and - fat reduced products such as light mayonnaise, low fat yogart and light cheese
* Avoid high fat snack foods such as chips, snacking crackers and cookies
* Include your favorite foods and treats once in a while to avoid feelings of deprivation and to learn to fit these foods into a healthy eating pattern
* Learn to eat in response to hunger but stop eating once you are satisfied
* Don't subject yourself to hunger. Eat a banana; have a light hot chocolate; or drink a glass of tomato juice to carry you over to the next meal
* Eat at least three times a day, more often if you are hungery. Spread calories out so that 300 to 500 calories are consumed at regular intervals throughout the day.
* Watch portion sizes. Big bagels, oversized muffins or Caesar salads often contribute two to three times the calories and/or fat you think they do.

Healthy Eating Tips: Maintaining a Healthier Weight

People who have lost weight adn kept it off view weight control as a lifelong effort. They use the same strategies to maintain weight as they used to lose weight - healthy eating and an active lifestyle. For these people, weight loss was not an end in itself but a means to an end that included better health, more confidence, improved self-esteem and the ability to do other things in life.

Try these strategies to help you maintain that weight loss:

* weigh yourself at least once a week to keep tabs on your weight plus you can tell by the way your clothes feel - ie loose/tight
* deal with small weight gains immediately. It's normal for weight to fluctuate, but set a top weight limit for yourself. Once your weight hits this point, be ready with a plan to reduce this weight.
* keep in touch with friends, family members or programs that helped you lose weight.
* learn to deal with life's problems without turning to food. While there's nothing wrong with taking a break with a cup of tea and a few cookies, if you find yourself repeatedly overeating in response to stress and anxiety, you may want to seek some professional help. Also try yoga, deep breathing exercises, pilates, message therapy as well to try and reduce stress/anxiety.
* don't let your hard earned efforts to be healthier be thwarted by minor setbacks such as eating binge or overindulgence during holidays or celebrations. Forget it and get back on track as soon as possible.
