Story about existence of Durga


Goddess Durga is the prominent Hindu God deity who is the form of Maa Parvati the consort of Lord Shiva. 


Once there was a devil named Mahishasura who grew in negative powers and strengths. He began to disturb the entire universe with his negative powers and started creating chaos which was uncontrolled by the male gods. 


This threatened all the gods who then went to find the reason behind Mahishasura's unbeatable powers. They found that Mahishasura was blessed with a boon that only a female can conquer the devil. After this all the male gods decided to unite their powers and create a super power. This super power took the form of a female goddess known as Durga who was created to conquer Mahishasura and save the Universe from destruction.  


Goddess Durga then conquered the demon Mahishasura and got the Universe rod of the wicked evil. The glory of Durga was widespread in the entire universe who is considered extremely pious and worshipped till date by the devotees. 


In addition to Mahishasura there are devils like Sumbha-Nisumbha, Chand-Munda, Dhumralochana and Raktbeej were conquered by Goddess Durga. 


Festivals related to Durga 


The major festival related to the worship of nine sacred forms of Durga is Navratri. It is a nine days celebration which falls twice a year in the months of Chaitra and Sharada. Nine forms of Durga are:

  1. Shailaputri (Daughter of Mountain):

  2. Brahmacharini (Mother of devotion and penance):

  3. Chandraghanta (Destroyer of demons):

  4. Kushmanda (Goddess of The Cosmic Egg):

  5. Skandamata (Goddess of motherhood and children):

  6. Katyayani (Goddess of Power):

  7. Kalaratri (Goddess of Auspiciousness and Courage):

  8. Mahagauri (Goddess of beauty and women):

  9. Siddhidatri (Goddess of Supernatural Powers):


Structure of Durga 


The appearance of Durga is extremely attractive with a magnetic charm on face. Her glowing eyes are filled with love and compassion for her children. The distinct statue of Goddess Durga displays 8-10 arms in different postures of blessings, some holding a weapon and others some symbols of worship. She is always seen clad in red coloured saree on a ferocious tiger.
