10 Hidden Details of Mary Jane From the Spider-Verse

The Spiderman universe is filled with a lot of interesting characters but no one comes close to Mary Jane. Playing the love interest of Peter Parker, Mary Jane’s character adds romance and drama into the series and while many argue her questionable decisions throughout the series, Spiderman, or even Peter Parker, would be incomplete without the support from Mary Jane. This is highlighted very well into Marvel’s series of films. Critics and fans have argued that Mary Jane was not found a lot of times in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse and in the context of the spotlight, they are true. However, over the course, many have found some easter eggs that show Mary Jane’s presence in a seemingly unnoticeable manner. Here are a few of them.

  • Mary Jane at Kingpin’s benefit

Mary Jane makes an appearance towards the end of the film at Spiderman’s funeral. Her presence confirms that Mary Jane knew about Peter Parker being Spiderman. However, her showing up at the funeral arranged by Spiderman’s killer is highly debated. Many think that Peter did not reveal details about his work or Mary Jane knew very little about the investigation by Spiderman on Kingpin. At the funeral, Spiderman is surprised by Mary Jane’s appearance which means that Peter did tell Mary Jane about Kingpin. She doesn’t make a scene at the funeral when she meets Spiderman, however many seem to speculate that Mary Jane did not know about Kingpin.

  • Gwen Stacy’s band

One of the most interesting and hidden easter eggs about Mary Jane lies in the hands of Gwen Stacy. In another universe, Gwen Stacy is portrayed as one of the love interests of Peter Parker. The film reveals her as a musician who plays drums for the band The Mary Janes. Fans almost immediately noticed the reference and many did feel that the clever reference made up for the lack of presence.

  • Mary Jane’s religion

Spiderman’s religion is a question that has different answers according to the references. Most of the time, Spiderman is shown celebrating Christmas. He also prays to Jesus Christ in some series. However, in the movie, we see Peter Parker being buried at a Catholic church. This is contradictory to their wedding where we see both of them following the Jewish traditions of stepping on the chuppah glass. This has sparked conversations regarding Mary Jane’s religion as Peter is believed to be a Christian. The move confirms that Mary Jane is Jewish.

  • The Ultimate Universe

In the comic series The Ultimate Universe, we see Mary Jane as a character that has always been the first love of Peter Parker. Mary Jane is present since Day 1 while in the film, Mary Jane is portrayed very differently. Both however show that Peter and Mary Jane end up together.

  • Spiderman’s funeral

One of the only times we remember Mary Jane from the entire film is during Spiderman’s funeral. She delivers a eulogy at St. Patrick’s Cathedral and while this is seen as the only time Mary Jane is given a substantial spotlight, this would not have been the case if the script had not been changed. In the Ultimate Universe, Spiderman’s funeral is arranged by Tony Stark at the same venue. However, Mary Jane is absent from the funeral in the comic series whereas Mary Jane shows up at the funeral in the movie.

  • Mary Jane as Spider-Woman

One of the times when Mary Jane experiences a shift in her character is being a Spider-Woman in an alternate universe. Mary Jane is a completely different character in that universe who ends up falling in love with Sunfire, also known as Mariko Yashida. It is rumored that Mary Jane from the alternate universe may make an appearance in the sequel to the film.

  • The Spiderling

The movie shows that Mary Jane and Peter Parker eventually end up marrying each other. Although there is no hint to the future, many fans have linked the ending of the Spider-Verse with the spin-off series Renew Your Vows which shows that the couple has a child together. Mary Jane joins Peter Parker along with their daughter to fight crimes as a family. Mary Jane as a Spider-Woman makes an appearance for the second time on the list.

  • The Rescue!

One of the most discussed scenes from the film is the reference to the rescue from Sam Raimi’s version of Spider Man played by Toby Maguire. The original scene is when Spiderman rescues Mary Jane and shares an upside-down moment with her. Spider-Verse also sees a similar scene which is a nice reference for fans of the film.

  • Mary Jane and Peter Parker’s divorce

Another reference to Sam Raimi is the reference to the original script where Peter and Mary Jane go through a messy divorce. Unlike the Spider-Verse, the original script for the movie showed that Mary Jane wished for a child and Peter did not take it well. In Spider-Verse, Peter has an affair with Felicia Hardy who plays one of the love interests. Mary Jane seems to be taking a mental toll in every script.

  •  Mary Jane’s voice

Not many know that the voice for Mary Jane was offered by Zoe Kravitz. One of the rare times that we see Mary Jane speaking is during Spiderman’s funeral. Mary Jane may not have made a visible mark in the film but has been blessed by the voice of a star. This is not the first time for Zoe to voice in a superhero movie as she has also lent her voice to Angel Salvadore from X-Men First Class.
