I have been told that researching your keywords carefully and even using long-tailed keywords will get you better results. Try to think like your target audience and use keywords that you think they will use in a search for your product or service.

The most effective way to get to Google's first page is to;
1) Write unique quality contents
2) Build links to your site
3) Get more plus ones for your site.

Google has been giving much preference to plus one and that's one aspect that has helped some of my blog posts in getting high rankings.

Getting on the first page is easy - right keywords and some promotion on social media will get you there fast. The hard part is preserving this spot.

Google tend to be nice to new content and if it is reasonable, with good keyword and social media exposure it will rank it high fast (strong domains also helps a lot).
Yet, if your content won't get some backlinks in a reasonable amount of time - it will drop fast. (On the other hand if it will get too many weird backlinks too fast Google will assume you are gaming the system and will drop you as well).
