Is this ethical?

People almost regularly ask me if using subliminal suggestions (a type of hypnotism) to get 'orders' etc is ethical in a business sense. The surreptious talk going around is that big advertisers (on TV, internet and other media) use this exttensively, so why not on an individual basis.
Any inputs will be most welcome, as I can not find an answer to such questions.

I was taught in media class in high school, that those 'hidden messages' are in EVERY ad on tv, in magazines, and on billboards. That has not changed. Even on the internet I see a lot of that.

Are there any ways to identify such? I know its quite stupid to ask ths (it IS subliminal), however, are there any visible thingys on the 'ad' that could be used to know (for someone on the inside)?

Look for the picture inside the picture. There are usually a word like SEX writting into the picture of a woman dressed sexy. Look through magazines. Once you train your eyes to see them - it will be like reading a good story.

I actually know a lot about this topic, and will provide you an example when I am done explaining.

Subliminal messaging to sell a product is absolutely illegal in the USA and I believe in most parts of the world (check local laws). Subliminal messaging to sell a product is absolutely unethical and anyone caught doing it should rightfully faces legal issues from doing it.

Big companies do not use subliminal messages to sell a product and this is a key point you must understand. There were studies done on this very topic in the USA and that is why it is illegal. If you flash images of popcorn and/or soda during a motion picture playing at the rate of 1/100 frame rate, the sales of those products will increase... and this is an illegal practice.

However that doesn't mean subliminal messaging can't be used in marketing or advertising, it just means you can't use it to sell a product DIRECTLY. But of course as marketers we understand that rarely does advertising a product work so thats relatively meaningless anyways.

Rather what subliminal messaging sets out to do is create a subconscious need or desire for a given product. If my subconscious thinks that the sexiest of women like a guy who drink xyz brand of alcohol, you never had to try to sell me xyz alcohol, you had to convince me that women like a guy who drinks it. One is a direct sale, the other is not.

This may sound confusing, but thats really only because its MUCH more confusing than it sounds.

That is exactly what I meant. Thanks for clearing that up Bruce! I thought people were still using this ... I didn't know it was illegal. I will remember that. Thanks! :D
