I've been using Oscommerce shopping cart for the last 1.5 years. I knew nothing about php and mysql going into it. Talk about a learning adventure! I enjoyed creating my cart and site, uploading nearly 30 script add-ons to customize my cart from the default Osc script. Since doing that, they have released a newer version of Oscommerce. If I need another cart, I'm torn between that version or trying out ZenCart. Alot of script contributors for Oscommerce are also very active at ZenCart ... since the two cart are fairly similar in how they work and all.

I believe either would be a good choice to use!
