Everything is bigger in Texas including our security breaches!  Information of over 230,000 thousand people was exposed by Houston Independent School District and it was reported on Dec 3rd.  What a way to start your Christmas break.
I talk to business owners and risk managers every day who are not concerned by the different laws out there concerning Information Security and Identity Theft they tell me that they have it covered.  Well let see just how covered it is.  It's time to go back to school with a little lesson in Mathematics!  Now comes the credit monitoring issue because it has become standard that companies must pay for credit monitoring on the affected records.30,000 employees202,000 studentsAnd 9000 vendors We'll leave the vendors out of it since they are mostly businesses and not individuals that adds up to 232,000 affected records. Now lets take credit monitoring at an average cost of $10 per month and Houston ISD is looking at $2,320,000...per month for a year and you are looking at $26,400,000!

Now that's just credit monitoring, I didn't mention the fines both state and federal that they could be looking at.  The victims may have had a murky Christmas but the school district is definitely looking at a Crappy New Year!
