Artists' and Artisans' Place

Fellow Artists

Hello everyone!

I just barely found this wonderful group.

Thought I would offer my thoughts.

On the topic of Artists...

I wouldn't consider myself an "artist", but I guess in a way, I am.

I guess it just depends on your perspective.

I'm a graphic designer, and I've been told there's a very big difference from an artist and a designer. I've been told that designers are NOT Artists. All I want to know is...who's the official on the matter?

I would like to ask them - Who is considered an artist, and who is not?

I think I'm talented enough to be considered an artist. I do a lot of photo-manipulation in addition to my design work, and the occasional graphic illustration. Photo-manipulation isn't something all graphic designers get in to. A designer's skill sets are so very different. They all come from different backgrounds.

A designer can have skill sets from a painting background, a drawing / illustration background, or maybe even a computer graphic background. There are so many different ranges of skills, there really is no official way to tell.

A designer that simply does just logos, I don't think I would consider them an "Artist", but someone who has the skills to make a truly great work of art...(in my mind) that's something completely different.

I'm not here to down play graphic designers (I am one), but I think there are different ranges of skills. There are plenty of people that call themselves designers and artists, but their so called "works of art" don't reflect their skills.

Like I said, I don't consider myself an artist (I'm not an official on the matter either), but someone who see's my work, might think other wise.

Everything I've learned, I learned from my brother in-law. He is a professional photographer / graphic artist. He takes pics of women and turns them in to fairies, using his skills in photoshop. He is so very talented and he truly is capable of creating a realistic masterpiece. Photoshop my not be your traditional artistic medium, but it is a medium none-the-less.

Just like a painter and a sculptor are different, so are traditional illustrators and graphic designers. Each uses different tools, but they all use some of the same principles. We're all just one happy family.

Hope you all have a great night!

That's my blog entry for today. lol

I would love to hear other people's opinions! : D

Hi there - Sorry - but you do qualify as an artist! LOL you create something that is in your head and it turns up as an image that noone could see before. Photography, graphics and all sorts of things are genuine art.

Maybe they are not what is referred to as "fine art" - which is a word usually reserved for painters. But, along with a great deal of artisans work - it is surely a form of creative art!!

Welcome to our Group and come and show us some of your graphics
