Lesson from a five year old… Papa says so

Our 5 year old is our youngest child and as such has a special place in our hearts.  A spill of a drink and the devastated face is all it takes to change a potential scolding into a worried concert to see if he injured himself.

He is not always an angel that can do no wrong, much to the consternation of his older sisters.  I mean he does have his moments, like the one the other day, he not being a big fan of spinach, it wandered all over his plate as the meal progressed until it was the last remaining thing there.

My wife insisted he eat it and he looked her in the eye and defiantly said “NO!”  My wife then offered desert if he ate his spinach, still the answer was “NO”.

With a loud “EHEM” I looked at him, raised my left eye brow (I do a wonderful “Spock” imitation) and said “Michael, eat your spinach” at which point he simply said “OK” and gobbled it up.

My wife shook her head and asked my “why does he eat it when you tell him to but he will not do what I ask him to even with a bribe?  While I pondered an answer that would not have me sleeping on the couch, our little angel piped up with “because he’s papa”.

Ah the innocence of youth, or is it just that?   In business, how many times are we told to “Join This” or “Act Now” and instead we just hit the delete button because it wasn’t our “papa” who told us to act.

Not only that but when you make an offering to some one else do you have their respect or do you have to try and bribe them?  How well do the bribes work?  Do you find that those bribed come and leave almost as fast again?

Simple lesson learned from a child, if you want to make sales….

#1 Have a relationship with the customer,
#2 Be the authority they look to for answers!
