Water Treatment and Distribution System

The NSF Water Treatment and Distribution Systems Program is responsible for the Certification of drinking water treatment chemicals and drinking water system components to ensure that these products do not contribute contaminants to drinking water that could cause adverse health effects.
NSF/ANSI Standard 60: Drinking Water Treatment Chemicals -- Health Effects is the nationally recognized health effects standard for chemicals which are used to treat drinking water.
NSF/ANSI Standard 61: Drinking Water System Components -- Health Effects is the nationally recognized health effects standard for all devices, components and materials which contact drinking water. For more information on these two Standards click on "Relevant Standards."
Listings of products that NSF has Certified to these two standards are available by clicking the "Search Products" links in the menu on the left.
In addition to the health effects testing in NSF/ANSI Standards 60 and 61, NSF also offers performance testing and certification for drinking water treatment and other equipment used in public drinking water distribution. The NSF Public Drinking Water Equipment Certification Program (PDWEP) provides testing to validate manufacturer's claims such as Cryptosporidium inactivation for UV systems or microbial and virus reduction for membrane filtration systems. The certification program includes validation testing to EPA ETV protocols and ongoing factory production control inspections to ensure products meet established quality control requirements.
