Just before the collaboration between ESP and hetfield, Hetfields explorer style guitars were of Navigator band.

In the late eighties, ESP crafted numerous explorer guitars for Hetfield, including a lot of well-known instruments as raised middle finger inlayed EET FUK explorer, dots inlayed explorer bearing words A Year and a Half In the Life of Metallica; pt. 1. All of these guitars were named EX at the starting and later on referred to as MX-220ii.

MX-220II is a little bit shorter than the length (from the strap button at bottom to the end of the headstock), the angular is smoother slightly, the distance between the toggle swap to the knob is a little bit nearer than the existing explorer electric guitars. And it features a distinctive truss rod cover which is parallel to the nut and possesses 2 anchoring screws. The framework of this particular guitar concerning the combination of the body along with the neck is round jack inserted.

The further modification to MX-220II is using a metal plate with four anchoring screws to fix the ports. The truss rod cover nonetheless carries two screws, but is not parallel to nut any further. No alteration is done to the rest parts.

Later, in the development of the MX-220II, the ESP changed the construction back to bolt-on structure.
