Zinc oxide can be used in ointments, creams, and lotions to protect against sunburn and other damage to the skin caused by ultraviolet light. 

It is the broadest spectrum UVA and UVB absorber when used as an ingredient in sunscreen, zinc oxide blocks both UVA and UVB rays of ultraviolet light. Zinc oxide powder is considered to be nonirritating, nonallergenic, and non-comedogenic.


 

Pigment

Zinc oxide white powder is widely used as a pigment in oil paints due to its more opacity than other pigments. It is also used in coatings for paper. It has partly replaced the poisonous lead white which is harmful to humans.

Medicinal

Zinc oxide is used in mouthwash products and toothpaste as it has an anti-bacterial agent proposed to prevent plaque and tartar formation it is also used to control bad breath. Along with zinc oxide or zinc salts, these products also commonly contain other active ingredients,  essential oils, and plant extracts.


It is used in products such as baby powder and barrier creams to treat diaper rashes, calamine cream, anti-dandruff shampoos, and antiseptic ointments. It is also a component in tape used by athletes as a bandage to prevent soft tissue damage during workouts.

Food Additive

Zinc oxide is added to many food products, including breakfast cereals, as it is a  source of zinc, a necessary nutrient for the human body. Some prepackaged foods also include trace amounts of ZnO even if it is not intended as a nutrient.
