Your Kitchen’s Superhero

by Rods Kitchens Kitchen designer

Unfortunately, it’s not someone who’s wearing a red or black cape, or a body builder with a shield, neither a long-haired blonde holding a hammer or even a gigantic green monster who has anger management issues. It’s not Superman, Batman, Captain America, Thor or Hulk – it is something.

It is a white solid crystalline but commonly appears as fine powder; has been long known and widely used and has alkaline taste. Baking soda – your kitchen’s superhero; scientifically known as sodium bicarbonate, NaHCO3.

Baking soda was extensively used by fishermen two decades ago to prevent their freshly caught fishes from spoiling. Now, it has revealed its sanitising, deodorising, moisturising and many other powers. And to make things even better, this magical powder is readily available in stores and comes at a cheap price.

            Cleaning Powers

The kitchen is the busiest area in the household; its floors, walls, appliances, cookware and fixture suffer from wear and tear the most. And one of the challenges in keeping things neat and tidy in this area is the use of strong cleaning agents which can cause temporary or permanent skin damage. Well, it doesn’t have to be that way.

Baking soda is a safe alternative for cleaning tiles, sinks, countertop, bench top, furniture and walls. Simply mix with warm water, scrub and wash away the dirt. Silver flatware, coffee mugs, tea pots, oven and fridge can also be cleansed with baking soda.

Deodoriser

The kitchen, if someone forgets his cleaning duty, can have a funny smell made by various culprits. Use baking soda to deodorise and get rid of unwanted smell in your lunch boxes, chopping boards, fridge, dishwashers, bins, drains and sink.

Mix equal part water and baking soda and use it to clean your cookware, crockery, cutting board and fridge. You could freshen up your cleaning sponge as well by using the same technique. It would be best to sprinkle some powder in your bin to get rid of the funny smell.

Fruit and Veggie Scrub

Oftentimes, we’re not aware of the journey the fruit and vegetables have to take for them to be conveniently sitting on a basket. To make sure that you get rid of the dirt and residue of chemicals sprayed on your fruit and vegetables, scrub them with sponge damped with baking soda and rinse thoroughly.

Miscellaneous

Since it’s a superhero, you bet it does not only rescue your kitchen but other parts of your household as well, including you.

Baking soda is also the best cleanser, softener and moisturiser for your face, hand and skin. It is a good alternative for shampoo and removes residue brought by styling and dying products.Want whiter teeth? Your kitchen superhero is also known to put out fire, clean stuffed toys, carpets and even septic tanks. Cars, linens, closets, sneakers, vacuum cleaners, shower curtains, sports gears, clothes and many other household items can also benefit from the cleansing and deodorising powers of sodium bicarbonate.

Who knows? Give it another year or two and people will start unveiling more powers by this superhero.
