Why to dive in Tenerife?

by Diving Tenerife Diving School in Tenerife

Tenerife is not well known diving destination as Egypt and many divers are doubting if to go to Tenerife to dive or not. Though these days more and more divers find out that it´s an amazing place to dive and it becomes a really popular destination. Still many ask me if it´s worth going to Tenerife that´s why I decided to write this article.

Without any doubt Tenerife is the best diving destination located in Europe. Here it´s the best climate, you will not find warmer winter and better water conditions in any other European place. People call the Canaries "Islands of eternal spring" as it´s never cold here. The lowest temperature is 20 degrees. The water is around 19 degrees in the winter time. And in the summer it´s really warm: 24-25 degrees. The visibility stays good during the whole year. So divers visit the island any month of the year.

What can we see underwater? Obviously the life of the Atlantic ocean is rich and impresses anybody who submerges in its water. There are big and little marine creatures swimming everywhere and hiding between the rocks. We meet big turtles, cuttle fish, eels of different kinds, huge stingrays, angel sharks and many others. We watch how they live, how they hunt and flirt with each other. Every dive is always a new adventure. The landscapes in Tenerife are very unusual, underwater photographers find a paradise here as there are so many volcanic rocks and huge formations of lava formed by eruptions many centuries ago. All bubbling mass went down the water and became solid creating labyrinths of tunnels, caves and valleys. Now divers explore these underwater labyrinths with pleasure. It always gives a lot of adrenaline to pass long tunnels, huge caves and caverns. We also have a lot of sunken ships and there are many possibilities for wreck diving. We do a lot of courses to train diving in the wrecks and give certifications of PADI. Deep dives are available too. The ocean bottom goes abruptly sometimes up to 40 and more meters. So advanced divers can choose between different kinds of diving trips. Shallow bays like el Puertito with Canary turtles are very suitable for beginners: to do try dives or training of the courses.

Our diving school arranges the diving trips completely. We pick up from the hotels, bring divers to the dive spots and guide them underwater. Rental equipment is also available.

Another reason to come to Tenerife is also to explore the island itself. It´s a very nice place to go on excursions, there so varied landscapes, the highest point of Spain – Teide, laurel forests, beautiful beaches. It´s also perfect place for trekking, riding a bike, doing any water activities. So, basically you can do any kind of sports in Tenerife. So, if you come here for your vacations you can choose some days for diving and others for excursions.

If you come with your family or your friends that don´t dive you can invite them to do a snorkeling trip in the bay with turtles. So you you would go underwater and they swim with fins, masks and snorklers observing the marine life from the surface. And also observing you swimming underwater. It´s a fun trip, snorkelers enjoy it a lot as they always meet big turtles, that are very friendly and come to them without any fear.

What dive spots would we recommend for our divers?

For beginners we would advise to start with el Puertito, it´s shallow water there and nice views. Then Montaña Amarilla, el Pinque, Playa Chica and las Eras. You will find fascinating volcanic rocks there, a lot of marine life. Many animals keep to shallow water, so you will find them in abundance. For experienced divers we recommend such dive spots as Cueva de los Cerebros – a tunnel 70 meters long, where you can find lobsters, shrimps and others, in the end there is a big grotto; la Catedral – a huge rock formation where you will imagine yourself in a cathedral with big windows, halls and corridors; el Valito – good site for deep dives, perfect visibility, a virgin dive site as there are not many dive schools going there; Chuchos – dive spot where a family of big ocean rays lives.
