Why Napa Valley wineries are a delight for wine lovers
by Aurora Park Vacation RentalsNapa Valley
is a top- rated tourist destination and is world renowned for its incredible wine
and food. The valley’s most popular wines include Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot
and Cabernet Franc but Cabernet Sauvignon is without doubt the king of all.
Apart from its premier wines, the region boasts of its diverse cuisine,
picturesque sights and dynamic arts.
The region
was little-known until its two wines Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon had
beaten their French counterparts in Judgment of Paris, 1976. This victory took
everyone by surprise and eventually put Californian wines on the world map.
This wine tasting competition acted as a major catapult in transforming Napa
Valley into the premier wine making region of the world.
Napa’s first commercial winery -
Charles Krug Winery
Charles Krug
migrated from Germany in the mid-1800s and acquired 18-acre vineyard land for
establishing his winery. In 1861, Charles Krug Winery was listed as the first commercial winery of the region. He also
introduced the cider press that helped a lot in updating the winemaking
practices. The winery is owned and operated by the Mondavi family since four
generations.
To Kalon vineyard - First to plant
Bordeaux and other French varieties
This
vineyard was discovered by Hamilton Crabb in 1868. He planted different
varieties of French grapes across his Oakville estate. It is known for growing
some of the highest quality grapes in the valley, and its success largely lies
because of its terroir.
Longest continually operating winery -
Beaulieu Vineyard
This winery
was established by Georges de Latour in 1900. It is the longest continually operating
winery as it was one of those few wineries that were allowed to remain open
even during the prohibition time. Being one of the most iconic wineries, it has
maintained the standards of innovation and quality.
First winery to bottle and label its own
wines – Inglenook
This winery
was founded by Gustave Niebaum, a Finnish sea captain who wanted to build an
estate that would be a rival to the Europe’s finest wineries. Earlier, the
wines were sold to brokers in casks itself where they were blended and bottled.
It was because of the Niebaum’s innovative practices that led to the labeling
of the wines in his own winery.
