Why Is Mid Century Furniture Timeless & Still Popular Today

by Marie Ascolani Antiques Dealer

Styles tend to come and go but there are some styles which remain timeless and even seem to gain in popularity as the years go by. This is especially true when it comes to home furnishing, as many of us choose these furnishings, not only around what is popular but by what is going to remain popular in our eyes for quite some time.

For more than 60 years, midcentury furniture has been one of those popular trends. Manufactured in the mid-1950s and through the 1960s, this furniture really made a statement in comparison to what was on the market up until that time. It took on a very modernistic view, with gentle curves and sleek lines that continued to set the standards for modern furniture for many years. In today's society, it continues to be a very popular choice and when you are able to get some genuine midcentury furniture, you have something that will make a welcome addition to any home.

One of the reasons why midcentury furniture is timeless and continues to be popular today is because of the nostalgic appeal of the furniture. You might be surprised to learn that the baby boomers who were purchasing furniture during that time are not the generation which tends to embrace this style. Rather, it is those of us who fondly remember the days when we were younger and we lived our lives on this furniture in our parents or perhaps even our grandparent’s homes. Although it still has a modernistic appeal, it is also nostalgic and it helps to bring our minds back to days when things were simpler.

Many people that use midcentury furniture in their home also appreciate its durability. Even though it may have been used for more than 60 years, it still stands up against regular use in all areas of the home. In part, this is due to the manufacturing of the furniture and the fact that particle board was not widely used in the furniture of that day. Although much of the midcentury furniture includes laminate, it is over solid wood and that has lent itself to keeping the furniture around for years and continuing to use it as an everyday piece in the home.

How difficult is it for you to find these timeless pieces? You might be surprised with how many are available on the market. During the era after World War II, when much of this furniture was being manufactured, people were purchasing large homes and filling them with furniture. The economy was strong, for the most part, which allowed people to do so. More of a minimalist attitude began to display itself through the 70s and 80s and in many areas of the country, continues to this day. Much of the furniture, which was then considered excess, is still available in various areas of the market.

If you are looking for furniture that is going to be durable, beautiful and a welcome addition to the home, you will have a difficult time finding a better choice than midcentury furniture. If you look hard enough, you will find the perfect piece is out there waiting for you.
