Why is BIM used in Architecture & Engineering?

by Tejjy Inc CEO

During the design, construction, and operation phases, Building Information Modeling is used to create and manage data. BIM combines data from various disciplines to produce intricate digital renderings that are controlled in an open cloud environment for real-time collaboration. In US architectural, engineering, and construction sector, the use of BIM has been expanding for many years. The use of BIM software is almost a standard practice today. In a study conducted by the American Institute of Architects in 2020, all major architecture firms reported to use building information modeling only for services that could be billed. The market for BIM was estimated to be worth $3.6 billion in 2016 and is expected to increase by a compound annual growth rate to $18.8 billion by 2024.

Why is BIM used in Architectural Design?

Building information modeling is used by architectural designers at every stage of the design process to enhance quality and speed up workflows for concept design, modeling, multidisciplinary collaboration, and construction documentation. The technology known as "Building Information Modeling" helps architects and engineers create and construct buildings more effectively. Using BIM authoring tools, architects produce a digital 3D model of the structure, giving them a preview of its appearance and functionality. Architectural BIM services give architects the ability to produce 3D representations with more detail and non-visual information than the construction industry has ever accomplished.

How do engineers use BIM?

Building Information Modeling enables structural engineers to optimize and automate designs, reduce mistakes and risk, increase precision and constructability, and enhance project delivery in general. Engineers can create 3D digital renderings of buildings and other complicated structures. The usage of BIM engineering software promotes successful project outcomes, provides structural engineers with precise planning information, and establishes visual expectations.

BIM Services for Architects:

  1. Documentation: For each stage of the project, complete and accurate documentation is required like:

  • Design Development, Schematic Design, and Concept Assistance

  • Documentation for the permit stage, construction document sets, facade shop drawings, etc.

  1. 3D Modeling: Precise and information-rich 3D models were produced at pre-construction. Key 3D modeling services include exterior and interior walls, stud walls and details, floors and ceilings, staircases, vents, openings, doors and windows, detail components, curtain walls and rapid prototype (3D Printers).

  1. Visualization: Competent BIM companies provide customers with cutting-edge representations and walkthroughs of projects, clarifying design intent across stages like animation, 3D rendering, virtual reality, and augmented reality.

  1. Quantity Take-Off: To produce accurate cost estimates for procurement and installation, coordinated 3D BIM models generate accurate material amounts.

BIM Services for Structural Engineers:

  • Structural Analysis & Design Validation: Through the use of structural BIM services and design tools like RISA, ETABS, HILTI, etc., Building Information Modeling professionals evaluate, design, and validate steel and concrete structures based on Loads, Stress-strain, Bending moments, Shear forces, etc.
