Why is AIS Tracking Important?

by Shotgun Marine MM

Automatic Identification System is a system used for tracking ships automatically. It can be used in onshore vessel tracking service system or onboard ships. AIS marine system can track the movement of a vessel across the world. This system sends a signal from a transponder on a vessel which is received by a receiver located on another vessel or onshore.

It was created to support marine radar tracking to avoid collision and increase safety on the waterway. However, an AIS marine system is now used as a vital tool addressing the needs of a number of maritime stakeholders such as cargo owners, shipowners, cargo dispatchers, vessel operators, terminal operators, marine service providers, traders, maritime law firms, charters and more.

Let’s see the benefits of AIS tracking.

Cargo Tracking

Cargo and shop owners can use an Automatic Identification System to keep track of their fleet of vessels all across the world. This ensures better transparency to stakeholders and provides more accurate arrival times.

Analytics/Forecasting

Most of the AIS providers collect and store data. The combination of terrestrial and satellite AIS data provides companies with billions of vessel positions. Uploading and processing this data in different systems allows you to analyse, predict and forecast vessel traffic.

Demurrage Validation

It provides you with the ability to manage your demurrage costs in an effective manner. This is the biggest benefit of AIS tracking. You can learn about the exact time and location a vessel has departed or arrived. This data allows you to contest or validate the statement of facts. When the cost is continuing to rise, using this system can save millions of dollars.

Collision Avoidance

The original purpose of creating AIS was ensuring security and safety on the water. This system provides you with real-time data of traffic. This real-time data helps in avoiding collisions. In case audio exchanges, visual observation and radar detection fail, you can rely on AIS marine system for accurate information.

Incidence Response

Whether it is a response drill or an actual incident, this system can help you in tracking and monitoring barges, service boats, tugs and response vessels.

Vessel Traffic Services

Vessel traffic and congestion at harbours, ports and other waterways are increasing day by day. So, the movements of vessels are managed and optimised using a VTS.

Accident Investigation

The VTS and other parties involved in the investigation can use the data provided an AIS system, especially historical AIS.
