Why do you need an anchor?

by Kate Summel Sport

The word "anchor" in translation means anchor, and this word perfectly reflects the functions of anchor bolts, which for short are called simply an anchor. Like an anchor holding a ship, anchor bolts secure massive objects to the floor, walls, and ceiling. At the same time, it is important that the material to which the fastening is made is solid and dense - mostly it is real concrete. Foam concrete and its other porous varieties, as well as hollow blocks for anchoring are not suitable. For fixing in porous materials, chemical anchors are used. As a rule, anchors are indispensable for the repair and construction of houses. The use of anchors is envisaged in the design of residential buildings, as well as in ready-made projects of residential buildings.

How does an anchor bolt work?

The anchor, as a rule, consists of three parts - a bolt with a conical expansion at the end, a metal tube with longitudinal cuts on it, and a nut. When tightening the nut, the cone at the end of the bolt moves inside the tubular sleeve and moves apart its longitudinal cuts, which wedge in the hole and fix the anchor in it. The more the nut is tightened, the more the tube wedges and the tighter the anchor bolt is fixed at the attachment point.

Varieties of anchor bolts

The principle of operation of anchors is one, and there are many varieties of them. This is due to the need to attach various objects to different surfaces, both vertical (walls) and horizontal (floor, ceiling). The most commonly used types of anchor bolts are:

  1. Conventional anchor with nut. How it works and works was discussed above. Such an anchor bolt is used for fastening to a horizontal or inclined base made of concrete, solid brick, stone.
  2. Anchor with hook. It is used for attaching objects to walls that need to be removed from time to time. This anchor is similar to the previous one, but differs in that it has a hook at the end, rotating which, strengthens the anchor in the hole. In this case, the nut serves as a lock.
  3. Ring anchor. It is similar to an anchor bolt with a hook, but instead of a hook it has a ring at the end. This variety is used for hanging something from the ceiling or installing stretch marks.
  4. Expansion (shock) anchor. Differs in the way of installation. It is not screwed in, but hammered in with a hammer, followed by fixation with a nut. Such an anchor bolt is not intended for high loads and is used for fastening light objects, mainly in everyday life.
  5. Double-expansion anchor bolt. It features a double tubular sleeve, which, when the rod rotates, expands in two places - at its end and in the middle, which provides a more reliable fastening.
  6. Anchors with Phillips screwdriver and Allen key. These varieties are used most often, especially in everyday life. Screwdriver anchors are the smallest type of this fastener, their diameter does not exceed 12mm.

How to install an anchor bolt?

Installing any type of anchor bolt is not difficult.

  1. We drill a hole at the installation site. The drill diameter is selected in such a way that it is equal to the anchor bolt diameter. The depth of the hole must necessarily be greater than the length of the anchor, since it is very problematic to remove even an unscrewed anchor bolt from the hole.
  2. We clean the hole from dust by blowing it with a syringe; it is not recommended to do this with your mouth because of the danger of dust getting into your eyes. Insert the anchor bolt into the clean hole, driving it in with light hammer blows.
  3. We tighten the nut until it stops, after which we unscrew it, put the attached part on the rod and return the nut to its place, carefully tightening it with a wrench.

Anchor bolts are very necessary, in many cases irreplaceable fasteners. They are used both in industrial construction and in everyday life, in the repair and construction of houses. Ready-made projects of individual houses , as well as a wide variety of other house projects , as a rule, are developed taking into account the use of this type of fasteners.
