· Luster – is the most important value factor as with the other pearls. The rarest fresh water pearl has a metallic, mirror like luster. Luster ranges from dull and chalky to high.

· Size – fresh water pearls vary greatly in sizes. The smallest pearl is often referred to as a seed pearl. The most common sizes ranging from 6milimeters to 12milemeters.

· Shape - baroque is the most common shape of pearl produced in fresh water pearls. Shapes like ovals, buttons and drops are also common.

· Surface - a clean surface is more valuable than a pearl with blemishes. Some characteristics of pearls are dull, chalky spots. Fresh water pearls are composed of solid nacre and they tend to have more growth inconsistences than other types of pearls.

· Colour – the most common colours of fresh water are white and shades of pastel pink- orange and lavender. Other colours such as green, bronze, gold green also exist, but are quite rare. They come in array of colours. Colours such as black, chocolate, cranberry are also available, but undergo a dying process after harvest. Such colours are less valuable than the natural colours. Colour is usually considered a personal preferences and it does not affect the value of a pearl.
