Why Auto Insurance Rates Differ By Zip Code

by Robert J. Debry Personal Injury Legal Experts

There are few feelings worse in this world than those following a car wreck. Not only does it completely interrupt your day, but you then have to find an auto accident lawyer, deal with hospital and doctor’s bills and contact your insurance company.

It’s Not Just About Driving Records

Dealing with insurance companies can be the worst part of an auto accident. We all know that insurance rates can change based on driving record and type of car, but what many people don’t know is how auto insurance rates also change based on where you live. They can even change from zip code to zip code. So if you love in Farmington, Utah, you may pay less than your big shot lawyer neighbor in Salt Lake City.

CarInsurance.com reports that compared to other factors, such as driving records or vehicle, where you live can raise or lower your auto insurance rate by up to 82 percent. Insurance companies will take into account the number and severity of accidents in your area. So, when you are involved in an auto accident, you may be hurting your neighbors as well.

Drivers in Farmington pay over $160 less in annual premiums for car insurance than drivers in Salt Lake City, even though they often drive on the same roads and highways. Add that to the cost of a lawyer and medical expenses, and an auto accident could cost you thousands.

Among the cities with the highest car insurance rates are Detroit, Brooklyn and Philadelphia, while drivers in Green Springs, Ohio, Arden, North Carolina and Saco, Maine enjoy the lowest average rates in the country.

How to Save on Car Insurance

This doesn’t mean that drivers looking to save money need to move to Farmington. Although, that is an option. Drivers in all zip codes should strive to be better drivers, not only for personal safety but to contribute to a safer area with lower rates. Cities like Los Angeles are even implementing plans to help reduce crashes. No matter where you live, safe driving is always your best bet.
