Why are there Fewer Female Executive Protection Officers?

by Executive Protection Institute EPI was founded in 1978

Female bodyguards are very popular among female celebrities. Still, since executive protection has traditionally been a male-dominated arena, there is a shortage of talented women from which female celebs must choose. According to Harlan Austin, President of Bodyguard Careers, this shortage is attributable to the widespread belief that “size matters.”

The fact is that a successful executive protection officer should never have to resort to violence or draw a firearm. “Brawn over brains” is a concept that seldom holds true in real life. So, there is no reason to doubt that a woman who has completed her executive protection training can handle her roles and responsibilities as a bodyguard successfully.

Because the pools from which a bodyguard is chosen have historically been male-dominated (e.g., police and military), there is also a “boys club” attitude in the world of executive protection. However, since women are now much more integrated into traditionally male professions than ever before, they deserve consideration for executive protection positions.

Female executive protection specialists receive the same training as their male counterparts in threat detection, self-defense, security driving, firearms, and tactics. Furthermore, women have particular precious abilities that could be considered innate in females—the ability to listen carefully, use intuitive skills, and successfully negotiate conflict. Female bodyguards are also popular among female celebrities for other reasons. It is preferable to have a vigilant bodyguard, alert, and quick on their feet, and who will not attract attention in public like a 6′5, a 350-pound man might. Even the need for a bodyguard can be disruptive to some celebrities’ ability to live a “normal” life. A female celebrity accompanied by a female executive protection specialist is a more natural and unobtrusive fit.

Female executive protection specialists may have fewer opportunities, these positions can be very lucrative but since they are scarce.
