Know Differences between Tea hair as Dust and Normal Dust

Tea dust as the name signifies is the dust and fannings of tea left over from the broken tea leaves. It is most often found in the mass-produced tea bags. Scrapped from the bottom of the barrel, tea dust generally compromises with the tea flavor, however, when the leaves are broken, they lose oils and aroma which is the major contributor of overall flavor and experience.

Dust tea is the smallest grade of tea, much finer than the fannings (BOPF) which is most often used in tea bags with similar tea grades in order to make a strong tea blend.

What is Tea Dust?

From time to time, most of us found dust in our tea. The question has also arisen in the minds of many that “Is my tea ok?” However, the truth is that the dust which is found with the tea is actually a very important detail to judge whether a tea is of high quality or not?

If there is a lot of dust in the tea, this means that it was able to make it through all of the processing method, which clearly means that the tea was more carefully made by hand. Once the tea bag has gone under all processing method, there won’t be much of the leftover of original leaves.

It is also said that more the hair and tea dust, higher is the quality of the tea because only tea buds have so much hair. If the tea is of low quality, there won’t be any tea dust. If the teas are made up of big or old tea leaves without or few buds, it will be extremely difficult to find tea buds hair.

Other names of Tea dust

Tea buds hair seems to be little scary and odd, hence, other names that have been given are fuzz, dust, down or trichomes.

Methods of determining Real tea dust with normal dust

  • Judge with color: If the tea dust color is grey, it is likely to be real dust and must be thrown away. If the color of dust matches the color of leaves, this is the hairs from the tea and is perfect to consume.

  • Using a magnifying glass: It is used to check that the size of the hair must be longer, larger and more uniform than the dust particles.

India is the leading supplier of wholesale tea dust. The dust of the tea is produced under the extremely hygienic condition to maintain the originality of the tea.

Thus, we can conclude that the tea dust is the broken part of the tea leaves majorly used in tea bags.
