When Do You Need an Air Conditioner Replacement?

by Robert Morgan airzonehvac

People may think that the beginning of summer is the right time to think about air conditioners. But is your current air conditioner ready for the year-round challenge? If not, get it serviced, repaired or replaced.

When service and repair fail to show results, replacement is the right option. After all, you don't want to spend on costly repairs. Here are some signs that may indicate AC problems and demand a replacement.

1 - Your air conditioner unit is more than ten years old

If your unit is getting old, you should think about buying a new unit. Air conditioners are often placed outside and exposed to extreme temperatures throughout the year, reducing their life expectancy. Modern air conditioners can last for 15-20 years, while older air conditioners last 10-12 years.

If you have neglected it, your AC may have a shorter life span. The unit's lifetime can also be affected by frequent use, how hot and humid it gets in your area, and whether or not the unit was the right size when you purchased it for your home.

If it's tough to replace a broken part, you will need to purchase a new unit.

2 – Your air conditioner unit breaks down frequently

If you're getting annual AC tune-ups from qualified technicians, your air conditioner shouldn't malfunction during the summer. Many common AC problems are caused by non-maintenance; maintaining your unit will prevent issues. Qualified HVAC technicians can see and fix any issues your AC is facing before the summer season begins.

If your AC has several faults despite regular maintenance, you may need to replace the AC immediately. It may be more economical to buy a new unit than to make expensive repairs after the warranty has expired.

3 – Your air conditioner unit is giving you a higher energy bill

Unless there is a sudden change in your home's energy use, your energy bill should remain almost same amount each month, changing slightly with furnace and AC usage for the season. It may be time for a new air conditioner if your energy usage rituals have remained the same, but your monthly bill has increased significantly.

High energy bills point that your air conditioner is either faulty or losing efficiency. As an air conditioner gets older, energy bills often rise; a corresponding increase.

Getting a high energy bill once or twice is not a concern. However, you may need a new AC if your energy bills shoot up and doesn’t come down.
