What will English language courses teach me?

by Theda Alvear Professional translation consultant

If you are looking to take English language courses then your target is oikely to be simple; to learn English, right? That is all well and good, but learning English takes a number of years to master, and you may be surprised that universities and employers are not simply looking for you to be able to recite an English dictionary. Obviously fluency is the long-term aim, but if taking English language courses is the first step for you, then there are a number of important things you will learn which are not simply focused on learning as much vocabulary as possible.

Taking English language courses in England is a great way to significantly improve the way you learn the language and doing so will give you a much better understanding of the language in the long term. More importantly it allows you to become fully integrated into English culture and allows you to pick up small things that you would not learn anywhere else in the world. Millions of people come to England to take courses each year so make sure you do not miss out.

One of the main reasons why taking English language courses in England is better than studying from home is that you can quickly become integrated with English culture. CUlture is something which you can only understand when you live in a county for a while, and understanding a country’s culture is something which should not be underestimated. Knowing how an English person behaves and what is socially acceptable and what is not is going to be very important if you have any intentions of studying or working in England. You need to get a grasp of what things typically make English people tick and what is likely to annoy them! This can make a huge difference to your chances of success.

Other things that you will learn whilst taking English language courses are of course specific grammar and vocabulary information. English is a notoriously difficult language to speak as we have many words which have more than one meaning. There are also many different tenses and different ways of saying the same phrase. For those who struggle with the English language, coming to England and learning from a native speaker often makes it much easier to learn as they will ot try to overcomplicate things. Having inherently grown up with the language, it becomes a lot easier to teach it as opposed to simply explaining it.

You can also expect to learn specific language skills which are applicable to living in the UK. In school, students are taught how to speak enough English to get along on a daily basis, but they do not cover enough material to explain how to conduct a business translation for example. By studying in England at an older age, you are able to learn vocabulary which is more applicable to you and which will not leave you looking uncomfortably when you attend a job interview for example!

Studying English is a great way to increase your employability and to seize an opportunity to further your career. It is a valuable skill to have and one which is sure to benefit you in all forms of life. Language courses are a great way to refine your skills and by taking courses in England itself, you will have one step up over those who simply settled on studying from home.
