What Type Of Meal Can You Expect On A Flight?

by Rio Dave Hair Stylist
Anyone who has travelled on flights a few times will have had a poor quality meal before. Some airline companies consistently excel at offering their passengers the worst food imaginable.

It is a bad start when you are served foil wrapped food on a tray and have no idea what you are looking at, or cannot suss out which part of the meal is the main course and which dish is supposed to be the dessert. For many years, the air industry has been the subject of many jokes about this type of meal, due to a group of companies who are renowned for awful inflight ‘cuisine’.

This reputation has been highlighted over the years by the press who have been keen to make headline news of in flight catering blunders. Several companies have sought assistance from well known chefs, to assist them to turn around public opinion of them. Many years ago, the story was very different. Until the late 1940's, airline passengers dined at a dressed table and ate restaurant quality food served on china plates. In those days, all passengers were treated to the same level of service and everybody received the best, restaurant quality food. Airline companies strived to provide the best quality service possible to all of their passengers. As travel by air grew in popularity, airline companies looked for alternatives to using restaurant and hotel chefs to handle the preparation of their food as this was no longer feasible for large numbers and began to rely on industrial catering providers, in industrial, factory type units instead.

The industry is still showing no sign of slowing down and continues to expand every year and these days all of the in flight meals are prepared and packed in large factory units which are usually positioned in or near to the airport. Most of these meals are frozen immediately after preparation, to be reheated later on board the flight. People with economy class tickets are usually not entitled to food or drinks on short flights unless they pay for them.

Passengers travelling first or business class will receive much more refreshments and are usually offered a variety of meals, which are also better quality than the ones served to economy passengers.

Many people who fly frequently insist that the only guaranteed way to ensure you will receive a great quality meal on a flight is to ask for a special meal to take care of your dietary requirements, so if you are really worried about getting a quality meal, you could try requesting a kosher, halal or vegetarian meal to see if that is actually true!

Alternatively of course, you could simply choose to fly with one of the companies that consistently get it right when it comes to their catering.
