What to Do When an Earthquake Strikes?

by Safety Owls Earthquake Survival Kit
The U.S.A. is one of those few countries that has the most number of earthquake prone regions across the globe. While there are emergency organizations to save the lives of the people, most of the victims are overdue for a big earthquake. And that is why, the residents of the earthquake prone regions should be well prepared for a major shake any time.

Each family member should be prepared to be on his own for at least 48 hours. Of course, food, water, and first aid essentials may not be available. And this is the time when an emergency survival kit plays the most important role.

In simple words, an emergency survival kit is a package of necessary supplies, and essentials, prepared prior to the event of any emergency. Emergency survival kits come in a variety of types and sizes, containing supplies and tools to provide the victims necessary assistance. Some of the basic essentials are first aid kit, safety vest and mask, knife, rope, torch, whistle, cell phone, food and water.

Keeping an emergency kit handy is not the ultimate solution unless each member of the family knows how to use it. During the event of an earthquake, when it becomes messy everywhere, picking the right tools and things can make all the difference. Since the catastrophic events do occur without any prior notification, therefore, most of the people don't even get time to react.

It is recommended to keep calm and have a bag ready to go with necessary items whenever an earthquake strikes. Place a first aid kit on the top of the earthquake preparedness checklist. Additionally, keep a couple of blankets, and enough food and water that would last at least 3 days.

During the shaking, don't panic and try to escape your room or building with the shelter against the elements falling. DO NOT use the elevators. If you are unable to find an escape route, then prefer getting under a table or a desk. If you somehow succeed in getting out of your room or building, then look for an open area and make sure you stay away from overpasses, power lines and trees.

After the earthquake, check yourself and your family members for the injuries. Help the needy and don't move seriously injured individuals unless they are in immediate danger. Do not switch on the lights if you smell gas. Open windows and leave the house instead. Call the police, ambulance, or fire department if needed.
