What Makes a Successful Executive Protection Officer?

by Executive Protection Institute EPI was founded in 1978

When it comes to executive protection training, "hard skills" like shooting guns, performing high-risk maneuvers while driving, and running tactical drills at the shooting range tend to be highly valued. However, when it comes to the simple question of "what makes a successful executive protection officer," are these skill sets really the most critical factor? They are essential — but they are not all that matters.

In addition to hard skills, a successful executive protection officer must also have certain traits such as:

  • Reliability: When you have a clear set of responsibilities, it is critical that you can hold yourself accountable for meeting them.
  • Confidence: When things do not go as planned, the ability to remain composed and in control is crucial in preventing a potentially hazardous situation from escalating or going off the rails.
  • Resiliency: Despite working long hours and getting little sleep, as well as dealing with stressful conditions, executive protection officers must be able to absorb the stress without lowering their guard or abdicating their responsibilities.
  • Discretion: Protecting sensitive information about your client's movements and personal life is critical in the world of executive protection.
  • Situational awareness: When it comes to safely facilitate your client's movements, your ability to read your surroundings and understand how you fit into your environment is critical (s).

Again, we are not saying that "hard skills" are unimportant. The common adage that "if you find yourself using your weapon, you didn't do your job properly" ignores the dynamic and unpredictable settings in which executive protection officers often work. Situations that necessitate hard skills usually pose the greatest risk of harm or damage. When it comes to damage mitigation, executive protection training that teaches aspiring bodyguards how to handle firearms engages in hand-to-hand combat, drives defensively, and provides emergency medical assistance is invaluable and should never be overlooked. No matter how carefully you plan, unexpected events are sometimes impossible to predict.

The hard skills and traits required to be a successful executive protection officer are not easy to come by. If you are new to the executive protection industry, consider signing up for a personal bodyguard training course.
