What is the best time to have a Tibet tour?

by May Liu Writer

Tibet is a high altitude plateau set amid tall mountain ranges. The mountain ranges catch the rainfall before it reaches the plateau, so most of Tibet, except for the southeast, is desert steppe, tundra, or permafrost. Most of Tibet travel experiences frost at least six months of the year, and the highest lakes have ice from October to March. The weather varies a lot from region to region.

It’s now the peak tourist season in Tibet. But due to the region’s elevation, the climate can be very poor, making it difficult for some travelers to adapt as they struggle with altitude sickness. So, what is the best time to have a Tibet tour, and which part?

From May to October is the best time to  have a Tibet travel, when the weather is not very cold, averaging above 10°C. This is naturally the busiest travel time in Tibet, when people come for the warmer weather and higher oxygen content.
July and August is the rainy seasonin Tibet, though, apart from in the southeast, there is still not a lot of rain.

The best months for camping are May and September when it hardly rains at all.
There are several ways to do this trip. I will stick with the main route focusing on Nepal to Tibet as it's often times the one that causes the most confusion.
For an easy trip: do the China Tibet route. Less visa hassles and it's pretty straight forward meaning less time. Simply book a tour from Beijing and off you go. I'll cover the tour-less option in the FAQ's.

Foreign tourists and Taiwan tourists can’t apply Tibet Permits in individual, and there’s no travel agency can provide "permit-only" service, so the only way to get Tibet Permits is to book tours with a local Tibet travel Agency directly.

If we only take weather into consideration, April to October or summer to autumn is the best time to have a Tibet group tour, when the Tibet’s weather is not too harsh and most areas of Tibet are accessible. In addition, it is also the best time to visit well-known tourist sites in Tibet, such as Mount Everest and Lake Namtso.

It is fantastic to make a Tibet group tour to explore the hidden attractions of Tibet, but it is not good time in winter. During winter, not only the mountains are inaccessible but the highways that take you to the trail heads are blocked if it snows. It is extremely cold in mountainous areas of Tibet in winter. Thus, it is not suitable to do a trek in Tibet in winter.

This article is designed to help travelers choose the best time to travel to Tibet.
Tibet’s weather is variable and changes from place to place, due to different landforms. Broadly speaking, the climate in Tibet is divided into 2 kinds— the climate in highlands and the climate in Southern and Western Tibet.
