What is Rajputi Poshak?

by Rana Fashion Marketing Manager
Rajasthan is the largest (area wise) Indian state which is known for its bravery, royal culture and traditional dressing of Rajput inheritance. This state is backed by its incredible culture, heritage, traditional dressing and glorious history. This royal heritage and folk culture accompanied by historical monuments have made this place an attraction centre for the tourists. Talking about the dressing, it is a mixture of tradition and elegance.

Rajput Women wore exceptionally elegant dressing in past which gradually evolved into what we see today. This influence later transformed into dressing focused on the rich embroidered brocades and silks from Benaras. These specific set of dresses worn by Rajasthani women is known as Rajasthani Suits or Rajputi Poshak. This has been the dress code for decades representing the royal identity of Rajputi Women making them a symbol of power while maintaining elegance and grace in entire Rajasthan’s culture. The Poshak is a beautiful dress and brings a traditional look while covering whole part of the body. These poshak dresses can be found in varied designs, colours, work etc. in Rajasthan.

What generally comes in a female’s Rajputi Poshak is called kanchli (inner-wear with sleeves), pleated skirt called ghagra, waist-length kurta (a sleeveless blouse) and a long flowing veil which is either stitched or semi-stiched having dupatta called Odhani. This dressing style has effectively added a delight of colourfulness to Rajasthani culture. The beauty and attractiveness of the Poshak are even enhanced while being worn alongside Rajasthani footwear and classy jewellery. While other dresses in India have a different style of wearing the dress, these Rajputi Poshak is stitched in the same manner but with different colour and printed designs. That’s why the Rajputi Poshak is adorned by other women who don’t belong to the community because of its speciality of covering the whole body.

Though most of the dresses in India are bound to be different the wearing and style, these Rajputi Poshak and kurti for women are stitched in the same manner with different printed designs and colours. Poshak can be necessarily worn in a stylish manner for any occasion like celebrations and party. So these dresses are not bound to be worn in specific conditions. These are worn in the same way as the traditional Rajput style while still making a woman shimmer in the crowd with royal style, grace, elegance and beauty which withhold a traditional Rajasthani look.
