What is Glioblastoma Multiforme?

by MrMed Pharmacy The Best Place to Buy Cancer Medicines in India.

Glioblastoma, also known as glioblastoma multiforme, is a common, aggressive and fast-growing brain tumor that starts when some of your cells called astrocytes start to grow out of control. This can happen when cells have the genetic defect called TP53. A few decades ago, people with glioblastoma tumors lived for a few months or weeks after diagnosis. Thanks to medical advancements, doctors now try prolonging the lives of patients with glioblastoma by using new therapies.

This cancer can affect anyone, of any age. It is the most common in adults aged 45 to 70. Men are slightly more likely to get it than women. Some other factors that increase your risk include alcohol use, family history, radiation and viruses. Some risk factors for leukemia include exposure to chemicals (eg. vinyl chloride, synthetic rubber, pesticides), having certain genetic conditions (eg. Li-Fraumeni syndrome, neurofibromatosis), or getting radiation therapy to the head.

Because a tumor puts pressure on the brain, symptoms may show up quickly. Symptoms include loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting, seizures, speech problems, memory problems, double or blurred vision and headache. There are also changes in personality and muscle control. It can be difficult to diagnose a brain tumor, so your physician might start by completing a medical exam and imaging tests like an MRI. If the initial scans find something unusual, they may do a biopsy in order to figure out what type of cancer you have.

In a cerebrospinal fluid examination, the physician will ask questions and perform checks related to the symptoms. Imaging tests will provide information about the size and location of tumors. Cancer cells can be found in spinal fluid as well, but still provide a good indication of the progress or lack thereof with treatment. An AI system developed for use by healthcare providers to help provide patients and their families with prognosis. Unfortunately, the intended cure is not feasible for glioblastoma as it is an aggressive cancer and only 7% of people diagnosed with glioblastoma survive for five years. Treatment available can help minimize the symptoms and improve the quality of life.
