What does RPA's (Robotic Process Automation) History?

by Pankaj N. Software engineer
To achieve various automation goals, RPA combines a number of technologies into a single toolbox. The initial development began after the 1990s, even if the name "RPA" didn't come into use until the early 2000s. Robotic process automation conjures up images of real robots working alongside humans to perform labor-intensive physical chores like loading or unloading trucks with heavy cargo, cleaning homes, etc. The reality, however, paints a very different picture. The word "robot" in "RPA" refers to a virtual system that aids in automating routine manual computing or business process operations, not a physical robot. Users can learn about a variety of RPA topics, including RPA Features, RPA Applications, RPA Tools, RPA Examples, and RPA Interview Questions, among others, through RPA Certification.

One of the technologies that contributed to innovation and ultimately led to the development of RPA is "Machine Learning" (ML). 'Arthur Samuel' created machine learning in 1959. Computers are now capable of carrying out a number of crucial jobs, including text summarization and translation, thanks to machine learning. However, there were restrictions on how language could be processed by machines. As a result, "Natural Language Processing" (NLP) was created, which improved how well computers understood and processed human language. In order to build the connections between computers and human languages, NLP combined "With AI" in 1960. Then, when RPA became a reality, technology advanced even further, and the 1990s saw a few additional advancements.

A technology that most closely resembled RPA emerged as a result of ongoing advances. The following three major precursors of robotic process automation are listed in the history of RPA:

Screen Scraping

The development of RPA is thought to have advanced significantly thanks to screen scraping technology. Data is extracted from the web, software, and documents using this technique and then displayed by another application.
While screen scraping had numerous advantages over physical labor, it was still somewhat constrained. It became challenging for the typical business user to grasp due to constraints and a lack of source codes, programmers, and documentation.

Workflow Automation and Management Tools

Workflow automation is a method that consists of a series of automated steps that aid in the reduction of human tasks. For their progression to be predictable, these actions must be repeated. By utilizing automated management technologies, such actions can be automated. Business rules are used in workflow automation to determine when a step is finished and the next can begin to be executed.

Artificial Intelligence

The ability of computers or robots to carry out tasks that traditionally require human intelligence is known as artificial intelligence. Learning, reasoning, and self-correction are the three techniques on which AI programming is founded.

Artificial intelligence has countless uses and may be incorporated into numerous fields and industries. A few of the often employed AI technologies include:

  • Image Recognition - It is the technology that recognizes and finds certain characteristics or objects in pictures or videos.
  • Speech Recognition - It is the technology that recognizes spoken words and phrases and transforms them into a format that is machine-readable.
  • Natural Language Generation - Structured data is converted into plain language using technology.
  • Sentiment Analysis - It is the technology that recognizes, extracts, quantifies and studies subjective data using biometrics, natural language processing, and text analysis.

RPA became such a powerful technical platform by combining all of these technologies, which also provided more advantages for business users.
