What Can I Do With My Nerves During A Job Test?

by Stefan Rick Psychialogist

Every body remembers that fear that follows you like a shadow before taking the exams. It doesn’t matter how much you have grown up, or how many test you have been taking, that stress is always there, and during a job test or a job interview the stress can be even more powerful, because the bigger the test, the bigger the stress.

So what can we do to deal with this fear?

First of all let’s make clear that the fear, the nerves, the stress or however you want to name it, is not something that you can eliminate. You cannot remove completely your fears, because is a natural response, but you can try to control them.

The best way to control those nerves is to build a confidence base in your mind. The best base of confidence you will have is preparation, the more prepare you feel for the Job Test, the less nervous you will be. You should try to see all the abilities you have, make a list with your skills and try to fill the paper, you may find more skills that you imagined, and within those skills the ones that can help you to improve your image. During the interview showcase those main attributes and capacities that will help you to fit better with the job position, always remember to see if the content on your curriculum match with the requirements.

Try always to look at the recruiters or interviewers as colleagues or teachers, not as enemies. They are there to assess you, not to judge you. It is also very important to remain calm, to keep it easy and smooth. Employers are not seeking for nervous or agitated people, so keep it clean, don’t overreact to any situation and if you need to take a deep breath and think for a second to answer a question, do it, the employer may see you as a person that doesn’t hasten.

You need to give everything you have, never keep your opinion if you think is worth it. The point of an interview is to led you show your personality and see which kind worker you are, so think twice if you are going to led the nerves control the first impression you give to an employer.

During the job test try always to read completely the question until you fully understand it, and if you don’t know the answer at that moment, skip to next one, I know that everybody says the same thing, but if everybody gives that advice is probably because it works. Always try to complete all the questions, even if you don’t know the answer.

If the job test is a psychometric test, don’t spend a long time cracking your brain to make the right choices, the test is designed to assess your reasoning skills. In case of a personality test, go along with the test and try to answer in the way you think, do not argue with the test, there is not a wrong answer, just a different point of view.

If you are required to take a job test more specific to your field of work you will be noticed with time, use that time to prepare yourself and build your confidence base.
