by Althaf M Yoonus Digital Marketing Executive

Following the New York City terror attacks in 2001, air travel within the country has been subjected to a lot of rules and regulations to enhance security. Therefore, it pays to be aware as to what you can carry on domestic flights in the USA. Read on to know a little bit about the same.

Liquids, Gels, and Lotions

When it comes to liquids, gels, and lotions, it is a good idea to follow the 3-1-1 rule of the Transportation Security Administration. This will help you to remember as to what you can carry in your luggage.

  • 3 – The capacity of the container that holds a liquid, gel, or lotion should be 100 ml (3.4 ounces) or less.

  • 1 – All these items must fit inside a clear, plastic bag of capacity 1 quart having zip-lock arrangement.

  • 1 – One passenger is allowed to carry only one bag. The bag should be taken out of the carry-on luggage. Further, it should be passed through a screening machine.

It is important that you keep this rule in mind even if you are booking cheap domestic flights.

Gifts and Food

The rule discussed above is applicable even in the case of foods that you might not be considered by you as a liquid. You will be allowed to carry foods such as salsas, sauces, syrups, jams, and dips through the checkpoint only if they are taken in containers of capacity less than or equal to three ounces. Further, they must fit into a 1-quart zip-lock bag. The same rule is valid for gift items such as lotions, creams, liquid soaps, perfumes, and snow globes. This rule might be applicable in the case of cheap international flights as well. So, check it out.

The Transportation Security Administration also recommends that the items listed below be packed in your check-in luggage. Or else, it is better to ship them in advance. You can also avoid carrying them with you. This helps to make the screening process at the security checkpoint smoother for everyone.

  • Cranberry sauce

  • Cologne

  • Creamy spreads and dips such as peanut butter, cheeses, etc.

  • Gift baskets containing food items such as salsa, salad dressings, jams

  • Wine, liquor, and beer

  • Cakes and pies are subjected to more screening processes.

This is not a comprehensive list of items you need to leave in the check-in baggage. It pays to have a clear idea in this regard for hassle-free travel. Furthermore, it is better to follow these rules irrespective of whether you opted for online Flight Booking or bagged the best flight deals at the time of booking your tickets.

Though you are allowed to bring gifts that wrapped up, they may be opened up for taking a closer look. Beverages cannot be carried through Security checkpoints. However, you can buy food and drink and take them with you after clearing security.

Finally, baby formula, baby food, breast milk, and prescription and OTC medicines in gel, liquid, or aerosol form are exempt from the 3-1-1 rule. They can be packed and carried in containers of more than three ounces capacity. However, they will have to be declared at the time of going through the security check.

Strictly prohibited include guns and firearms, sharp objects, tools, and sporting equipment. They should only be taken in checked luggage only.
