What Are The Symptoms Of Bad Fuel Injector? How To Check If It Is Creating Problems?

by Tracktech Fasteners Auto parts store

The fuel injector is a component commonly found on virtually all vehicles equipped with fuel injectors. The main function of injector o rings includes sealing the tip of the injector with the intake manifold and fuel rail. The Fuel rail, the injectors, and the intake manifold are separate and different components so they require a seal especially when they are completely assembled and secured together.

TrackTech Fuel injector seals are usually made of polyurethane or nitrile rubber due to their fuel resistant properties. While the o rings are made to be heavy-duty because using them for a longer period can eventually make it wear out and cause issues with the vehicle. On a general note, the bad or failing o rings will produce some symptoms that can alert the vehicle of a potential issue. So, we have mentioned a few of the symptoms of bad Fuel injector o rings as below:

1. Check for fuel smell from the engine side.

If you find a fuel smell from the engine’s bay, then check for the fuel injector o ring. Because a fuel smell is the initial symptoms of bad or damaged fuel injector o rings. If the fuel injector o rings dry up or crack, they may leak fuel vapors that will cause a fuel smell from the engine bay. The smell will eventually get stronger as the leak grows larger. So, replacing the fuel injector o rings would be the solution to avoid any further machinery failure due to damaged fuel injector cup set.

2. Check for Fuel Leakage.

Fuel leakage is another symptom of a bad or failing fuel injector o ring. On a general note, Fuel leakage is the stage of a bad or failing fuel injector that often comes soon after the smell. If any of the o rings tear or wear out they will leak fuel at the base, or top of the injector. Usually, a fuel leak will produce a very strong odor which may signal an issue. Due to the high flammability of gasoline, any fuel leaks should be taken on high priority and addressed immediately to prevent them from becoming a potential safety hazard.

3. Engine Performance issues: Start failure and decrease in power and acceleration

Engine Performance issues are another symptom of the bad or damaged fuel injector. It occurs after the leakage in the injector o rings that are significant enough to upset the air-fuel ratio of the vehicle. Moreover, a bad injector o ring can cause the vehicle to experience difficulty starting, misfires, a loss in power, acceleration, and fuel efficiency, and in more severe cases even stalling. Usually, engine performance issues will come after a fuel smell or leak.

Apart from it, most manufacturers suggest replacement intervals for fuel injectors to prevent the possibility of its failure. Because replacement of fuel injector or rings is not a part of the routine maintenance procedure, and it can create several problems due to being used for a longer period. If your vehicle produces any of the above-mentioned symptoms, or you find that your fuel injector is having some issues, TrackTech suggests you get your vehicle inspected by a professional technician for better assistance and replacement at a proper time.
