What are the Risks of the EMG examination?

by Hospital Product Directory CEO

The EMG Examination is considered to be a low-risk test that has no documented dangers. Though there is a small danger of bleeding, infection, and a small danger of nerve damage at the site of the placement of the nerve electrode. In the example of the chest wall muscles inspected by the needle electrode, there is a slight danger of an air leakage reasoning a lung to collapse.

How does one get ready for the EMG Examination?

Restrictions on food and medicine

When a patient gets ready for the EMG Test completed on equipment supplied by the EMG Machine Suppliers in India, he has to stop taking all medicines before he undergoes the test. If he takes Mestinon (pyridostigmine), he must especially ask if this medicine must be stopped for the examination.

What about a bath?

The patient must bathe before the test to remove all oils from his body. He must not smear creams or lotions on the body before the examination

What other precautions must a patient take?

The Neurologist who conducts the test requires to know whether the patient is suffering from any medical disorders. The patient must inform the Neurologist or other EMG workers:

He has a pacemaker or any other electrical device implanted in his body.

He uses blood-thinning medicines.

He suffers from hemophilia, a blood-clotting illness that causes protracted blood loss

What occurs before the EMG Examination?

The patient has to undress, wear a hospital gown and recline on an exam table. The Neurologist or medical staff will position surface electrodes on the various positions of the patient contingent on which part he is having symptoms. In another instance, the doctor may inject needle electrodes into the body, contingent on the patient’s symptoms.

What occurs during the process?

When the examination is on, the surface electrodes convey a tiny electrical current the patient may feel as a wrench or shudder. The needle electrode could cause unease or tenderness that disappears shortly after the needle is detached.

During a needle EMG examination, the neurologist will judge whether there is any impulsive electrical activity when the muscle is resting — an activity that isn't present in fit muscle tissue — and the degree of activity when you vaguely contract the muscle. If a patient suffers from any uneasiness during the examination, he can request the doctor to pause the examination.

What occurs after the process?

The patient may endure staining in the part where the needle electrode is injected. Though this staining should disappear in a few days. If it does not happen the patient is counseled to see his GP.

When does the patient get the results of the EMG examination?

The Neurologist interprets the outcomes of the examination and prepares a report that he forwards to the GP or doctor who has requested the examination. The doctor will discuss the outcome of the examination with the patient in a follow-up meeting.
