What are the best resources for a driving instructor?

by Daniel H. UK driving expert

When launching your own driving school, you will be faced with a number of challenges. You probably have the core ingredients: your car, insurance, a peaceful place to work, a mobile phone and a healthy client rolodex. But, did you know there are still value-added services you can offer once you on-board a student driver?

We're going to be talking about one such service here: "driving test cancellations".

What are driving test cancellations?

Driving test cancellations is when another student, who is ready to take their test, feels (for whatever reason) they no longer wish to take their test on their pre-decided date and time. For example, their car may have broken down, be feeling unwell, or otherwise feel that their chances of passing their test are low.

Students such as these cancel their tests. As long as they give the DVSA at least three clear working days notice, then they will receive a full refund for forfeiting their test. A clear working day as a complete working day that isn’t a Sunday or UK public holidays. Saturdays - somewhat surprisingly - are included in the calculation (which is good news!). Therefore, if today is a Friday, you can get a refund as long as your test is Wednesday or later (Saturday, Monday and Tuesday are the “clear working days” in this example).

But, what does this mean for you, as an instructor?

Well, this means you can snap up these opportunities in order to give your candidates and earlier driving test. There are a few companies that specialise in providing these driving test cancellations, one such is DrivingScout. Due to their excellent success rate, they’re the ones we recommend.

You can then find these driving test cancellations for your students, and charge them a markup. This is win-win: you look great for getting your student a highly sought after driving test cancellation, and you make money! What’s not to like?
