Ways for Defecting Faults of Audi During Engine-Starting and Idling

by Helen J. Hurlbut Helen Blog
An Audi 100 2.2E PCV can work after its engine has been started for two or three times. During its running, the engine can even extinguish during its idling speed, which may occur several times in one day. Then how to detect its faults?

This Audi 100 2.2E PCV has been equipped with K-Jetronic fuel injection system with engine of 5 inline cylinders. Its fuel injection control system features machinery control mainly while electronic control as auxiliary measure. The possible reasons of its failure in starting the engine or extinguish during idling are as follows: The pressure in fuel system is very low; the cool start-up system does not work; the Audi idle control valve and its control enclosure have some problems; the idling speed is not normally regulated; the gas-intake system has leakage; the ignition intensity is not strong enough or the pressure in the cylinder is low.

The check of the initiation of the engine should come first. It's necessary to take a check of the pressure of the fuel system. Just connect the pressure gauge of the fuel system to the joint opening of the filter cleaner. Start the engine again and see the exact pressure now. If the pressure meter indicates 520kPa, it means that the pressure is still slightly lower than the required value, but still in normal condition. Disassemble the starting nozzle of the cool start-up system and start the car again. If you find any fuel ejecting from the cool start-up nozzle, then this system is in normal condition. After that, you can try the cylinder pressure gauge to check whether pressure of each cylinder is above 1000kPa. If so, there is no problem.

After that, you can check the Audi idle control valve. Hold the valve and ignite the engine. If you can feel the vibration of the valve, it means the idle control valve has no problem. Disassemble the sparkle plugs in each cylinder to see whether the sparkle plug is in iron-like red color and with larger electrode gap. Replace the sparkle plugs with five new ones in the same size and start the engine again. During the normal condition of idling, you can use the screw to adjust the idling bolts in the throttle valve. Maybe the adjustment can solve all the problems. The idle control valve will work properly. In light of the low pressure of the fuel system, it is advised to change the fuel pump.

After a few days, the car owner comes again and finds new problems. The Audi car is still not easy to be started. During its idling, the initiation of the engine is not stable. With the change of idle control valve, some problems still occur. After further detection, it is because of the damaged solenoid valve that affects the normal working of Audi. When the gas-intake pipe is disassembled and the rubber between the solenoid valves is cut off, we find that the rubber has been racked. If we block the gas-intake pipe and start the engine again, we find it can normally run with stable idling speed. Until now, the real fault has been detected. It is because of the leaked rubber that cause difficulty in starting the engine and extinguish during the idling speed.
