The first thought you have after watching Kill Your Darlings is that John Krokidas’s debut feature, a drama about the early days of the Beat Generation, leans too heavily on cliché. Then you start to wonder what an unclichéd Beat film would actually look like.

More than 50 years on, every trapping of that movement feels worn-out, from the tappity-tap of typewriters in peeling New York apartments, to the sweaty assignations between thin young men with interesting haircuts, and the quiet plip of benzedrine strips as they drop into cups of coffee. But take those images away, and what’s left to keep the Beat?

At least Kill Your Darlings has one major novelty up its sleeve, which is Daniel Radcliffe in his second post-Potter persona. Radcliffe plays the poet Allen Ginsberg, and to see him engaging in all of the above, plus a (straight) sex scene in the library at Columbia University, certainly feels like something fresh.
Kill Your Darlings screened in the Venice Days strand at the Venice Film Festival earlier this week, after having its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival in January. (It will also compete for the first film award at the London Film Festival in October before its UK release the following month.) Krokidas’s script, which he co-wrote with Austin Bunn, is broadly based in fact, although essentially it is an American college movie in the Animal House tradition, and it coasts along on sex, pranks and liquor.

The film begins with Ginsberg arriving at Columbia, where he is bewitched by Lucien Carr (Dane DeHaan), a spectral fellow freshman and aspiring architect of an artistic and cultural “New Vision”. Carr introduces Ginsberg to Jack Kerouac (Jack Huston) and William S Burroughs (Ben Foster), and, like a team of literary Avengers, the Beat movement’s founders are assembled.

Carr’s long-time friend David Kammerer (Michael C Hall), comes as part of the package, although thanks to the historical record and the film’s icy prologue, we already know he ends up dead in the Hudson River. Much of Kill Your Darlings revels in the sweat and noise of Forties New York and the sweaty, noisy college lives of Ginsberg and his crew, but the film also has to work its way round to that watery checkmate. Every so often Krokidas remembers he has to move a piece and reluctantly does so. You can tell he is itching to get back to the parties and poetry, not least of all because you are, too.

Radcliffe embraces the chance to stretch himself on screen here in the same way he did on stage in Equus, and he makes a fine job of it: in spite of his character’s owlish spectacles and bookish natural habitat, thoughts of Potter never enter your head. Perhaps most crucially, he never plays Ginsberg as an icon-in-waiting. Unlike Walter Salles’s recent adaptation of On The Road, which embraced the Beat philosophy with a wide and credulous grin, Kill Your Darlings is inquisitive about the movement’s worth, and the genius of its characters is never assumed.

“There can be no creation without imitation,” Ginsberg’s English lecturer warns, when his star pupil decides it is time to tear up the rulebook. Kill Your Darlings gets the balance just about right: the film is built from equal quantities of both.
