Vitamin C Serum: How Every Skin Type Can Benefit!

by Leena Joseph Beauty Queen

Serum is different from a moisturizer or cream because it contains a concentrated combination of one or a few specific active ingredients in a liquid or gel-like consistency that penetrates the skin well. Unlike moisturizer or cream, this serum does not contain any "sealing" substances such as waxes, oils or butters that act as a barrier, to "seal" the moisture content of the skin.

Benefits of a Good Vitamin C Serum:

Vitamin C face serum is good for all skin types, from acne-prone to aging skin, from oily to sensitive skin. This is a contradiction because how can the same serum work well for both oily and dry skin? The idea is that vitamin C allows our skin to maintain its own hydration state, which means it will regulate the amount of oil it produces because it is already hydrated! Besides its use on all skin types, vitamin C has many other well-studied benefits:

Reduces Hyperpigmentation & Brightens the Skin

Melanin is what gives our skin cells their color, and sometimes when melanin is produced in excess in certain areas due to trauma or inflammation (ie UV radiation) it can cause hyperpigmentation and scarring. Vitamin C inhibits the production of melanin, so it is responsible for reducing the negative appearance of the skin, making it more beautiful!

Protection Against Trauma & Environmental Damage

Vitamin C is an antioxidant, which means it prevents damage caused by free radicals. This can start from sun damage and pollution and other environmental toxins, even other skin care products (ie. laundry detergent) In terms of wound healing from trauma, vitamin C reduces inflammation and (as we learned earlier) increases the production of collagen to help reduce wound healing time. This has been seen in children with severe burns, whose healing time improves when topical vitamin C is used.

Hydrates & Reduces Inflammation

As we mentioned before, vitamin C helps to seal the water. It does this by strengthening the skin's barrier system by increasing its production so that the skin can retain water more effectively. In addition, as we mentioned before, vitamin C face serum reduces inflammation so it can help treat any skin condition from acne to eczema and psoriasis, especially in the case of dryness and dryness. When it comes to acne, vitamin C prevents the oxidation of sebum or oil that our skin produces to reduce acne scars.
