Visit beautiful Omis Riviera

by Radisa Antic IT professional

Omis Riviera streches from Duce (2 km northwest from Omis) to small fisherman village of Pisak (15 km southeast of Omis). No doubt that this is one of the most beautiful areas in the whole Adriatic coast. Omis have rich and turbulent history. Date of founding of Omis usually means the building of Church of St Euphemia from the early 6th century. But Omis history is much older, and it dates back to Greek period. Definitely most amazing part of Omis history are Omis Pirates, or  Corsairs of Almissa. They ruled this part of Dalmatian coast for many centuries in medieval times. They had fast ship called Sagittas and they used them for fast attack and quick retreat to the mouth of river Cetina from where they defend and guarded the city of Omis.

Historical monuments in Omis are:

- Church of St Euphemia in Brzet near Omis, from the 6th century

- Mirabella Fortress  from the 13th century

- Church of the Holy Spirit from the 15th century

- Parochial church from the 17th century

- Franciscan Monastery from the 18th century

In Priko, part of Omis, on right bank of river Cetina lies the most significant part of Croatian history: the pre-Romanesque Church of St. Peter from the 10th Century A.D. This church, with a cupola and apse, was used in the 18th century as a Glagolithic seminary for novice priests. As I have mentioned earlier Omis Riviera stretches for more than 20 kilometers. All places that have settled on the Rivera are very beautiful. All of them have beautiful pebble beaches, with natural shade from the pine trees, and luckily the sea is crystal clear. And we, all together have to try hard to keep it that way.

The beauty of Omis Riviera is caught in an inscription on the lintel of a Renaissance palace in Omiš: "GRATIAS AGO TIBI DOMINE QUIA FUI IN HOC MUNDO" (Thanks be to Thee o Lord, that I have lived on this Earth). The destinations of Radmanove Mlinice and the Gubavica waterfalls (Velika and Mala Gubavica) are also points of interest. Radmanove Mlinice, located five kilometers (3 miles) up to the canyon of Cetina River, is an excursion/picnic place famous for bread baked under an iron lid (peka) and for fresh trout that can be caught from the river.

Along the coast, from Omis to the south east the following places have settled. Nemira (2 km far from Omis), Stanici (4 km far from Omis), Ruskamen (7 km far from OmIs), Lokva Rogoznica (9 km far from Omis), Medici (11 km far from Omis), Mimice (12 km far from Omis), Marusici (14 km far from Omis) and Pisak (16 km far from Omis). All of this places have beautiful and long pebble beaches with natural shade from the pine trees. And in all of the places you can find exceptional accommodation in private apartments. Most of them are right on the beach. So, every ingredient for excelent holiday is right here.
