styles sometimes take inspiration from the past. Maybe enough time has passed
that an aesthetic is welcomed with fresh eyes. Another appeal is connecting to
days gone by filled with glamor. Designer engagement rings can take vintage
styles and update them for modern tastes.
The Edwardian period lasted from 1901
to 1910 and left a lasting impact on jewelry. Platinum was the precious metal
of choice for its ability to hold the most delicate designs. Tone on tone was
popular, with diamonds adorning light colored engagement rings and more.
Cushion cut engagement rings in platinum or white gold pay homage to this era.
Art Nouveau’s heyday was between 1885
and 1910. The aesthetic embraced natural motifs, curving lines and color.
Modern interpretations may include diamond wedding
bands which coil around the finger, or mix yellow and white gold. Art
Nouveau inspired rings may mix diamonds and gemstones, or have bands of twining
or infinity shanks.
During the 1920s and 30s, Art Deco
reigned. Geometric forms, contrasting colors and international influences
characterize jewelry from the period. Platinum’s gleam was in vogue, and step
cut diamonds’ clean lines matched the linear aesthetic. Asscher and emerald cut
diamonds, baguette halos or side stones, and step cut colored gems emulate this
period. Platinum or white gold provide the desired background.
