Using Journaling Prompts? Avoid These Mistakes First

by Jhon Robson Journalist
Writing journals has its own set of benefits that can really help you get your thoughts together. In fact, writing a journal has been recognized as one of the healthiest ways to stay in conversation with your inner self and not allow any useful thoughts and ideas to go by. Apart from this, there are also many journaling systems available online that make the task of journaling much easier these days. For example, some of them offer journaling questions and prompts to help you get started with writing your journal.

That said, anyone getting into journaling who is not an experienced writer is bound to make a few elementary mistakes. Here are a few of them that must be avoided:

Using bad grammar and spellings

It is a fact that journaling is an activity that must come from the heart. People are always advised to write journals with little or no inhibitions and let sentences flow from the heart. Trying to be too closely aware of how your writing is going to sound to the reader may thwart the honesty in your writing. So do not get stuck in engraining perfection. Focusing on fixing spelling mistakes and bad grammar takes one away from the flow and inspiration of ideas.

Many believe that paying close attention to spellings and grammar may inhibit your thought flow and that is correct. This is your private space for letting out your feelings, emotions, ideas and pains. consider the journal your best accepting and forgiving friend. Adopting this kind of approach in your journaling activities will only benefit you in the long run. Journaling prompts and questions will only give you the ideas. The execution part and style is left up to you.

Using paragraphs or sentences that are too long

Sentences and paragraphs play a very special role in any written text. For the writer, they are segments and factions of their thoughts. Here again, we come to the subject of free flow when writing and the conflicts that arise from them. Many of us believe that writing freely according to one’s thought flow means writing endlessly long sentences and paragraphs. However, doing so may only confuse you when you come back to read your journal. One of the best pleasures comes from coming backing after a few days and reading your journal. If your sentences or paragraphs are too long, you are bound to lose the train of thought and this can never be good. So keep your sentences short, punchy, pragmatic and brutally honest. Let your emotions show on paper.

Fooling yourself

If you are going for technical journal writing, you will not face this problem. However, most of us writing personal journals often tend to be dishonest to ourselves at times. The mind has its own defense systems and sometimes, these defense systems keep us from realizing our shortcomings and areas that need improvement. It is very important to be honest with yourself when writing a journal so you can use the journal for growth and not to just soothe yourself.
