Using Donated Egg, Embryo and Sperm

In some cases, donated eggs, embryos and sperm are the only option creating a family. However it is a tough decision to go through any ART treatment, it is always good to learn prior to the commencing. Talk to your GP if you are opting donated egg, embryos and sperm as your fertility treatment.

Make sure that going through this treatment will have a strong impact on you, your partner and the relationship between you and perspective families. Mostly the treatment is recommendable if woman’s ovaries are not able to produce healthy enough eggs or in case of male infertility or other fertility treatment has been likely to be unsuccessful. Coping with infertility can be frustrating or devastating situation, it’s good to give time to yourself adjust with the situation.

Donated eggs, embryos and sperm are recommended in the following conditions:

Egg donation is suggested when female:

• Have no ovaries
• Produce low quality or no eggs
• At the stage of premature menopause
• Age is more than 40 years and has less chance to conceive with IVF using your own eggs.
• Both the partners are infertile and have been unsuccessful with other fertility treatments like IVF
• Have risk of passing genetic or inherited disorder

However, embryo donation is suggested when:

• Both the partner is at high risk of passing inherited and genetic disorder.
• Both the partners are unable to conceive with their own eggs and sperm.
• In case you are single and have menopause issue.

During donated program, a pre- pregnancy check- up followed with some blood test, ultrasound scan and physical examination can be expected. However donor needs to be screened for many diseases including infectious diseases like hepatitis B, hepatitis C and HIV with some genetic conditions.

In addition, Age is the major factor that is strongly considered while selecting the donor. In order to enhance the treatment outcome, donor’s characteristics are matched as closely as possible with the recipient’s characteristics like eye and hair color, face complexion and even interests. The identifying information of the treatment procedure is completely anonymous to baby born until they are 18. As per the legal documentation, the born baby will be your legal child and donor will not have any right on the baby, however if aspiring parents wish, donor can meet the child as per their instructions.
 
The treatment procedure of egg donation starts with synchronizing the cycle of donor and female recipients, hormones will be given for this. The donor needs to ovulate at the same time when recipient’s uterus lining is able to support an embryo for achievin11g pregnancy. Fertility drugs are also prescribed to donor in order to produce more number of eggs for fertilization. Once eggs are ready, they are retrieved under general anesthesia by an expert surgeon. Similarly the sperm donation process has been carried out. Men need to provide his semen sample for analysis and when egg is retrieved both are kept in Petri dish in laboratory for 3-5 days.
